Oil magnate JD Rockefeller was one of the richest men in history. Born into humble beginnings, he showed a talent for business early on. In the early 1860s, he and his business partners got into the crude oil business. In 1870 he founded Standard Oil, which went on to become the largest oil refinery in the world. The company was dissolved in 1911, after the Supreme Court ruled it a monopoly.
This is a Standard Oil stock certificate for 100 shares (approx 16 x 7.8 inches), signed by founder and President JD Rockefeller and Secretary Henry Flagler. The date of issue is May 17, 1888. To the left is a pink cancellation stamp dated July 16, 1891.
Rockefeller’s signature is bold and clear, a very fine example. The certificate displays strong eye appeal. A rare item from America’s most successful industrialist.
