Description

  • A 'Third State' copy of The Beatles' Yesterday and Today 'Butcher Cover' Album
  • With its original record, and a copy of the 1966 Capitol Records recall letter

A copy of The Beatles infamous 1966 Yesterday and Today album, featuring the controversial 'Butcher Cover' artwork by photographer Robert Whitaker.

Capitol Records pressed up 750,000 copies of the U.S-only release, but withdrew them from sale almost immediately when the band's chosen cover artwork proved too disturbing for the American public.

The label then pasted new cover designs over the top of the old sleeves to save money, and sent them back out to record stores.

Since then original copies have become famous and highly sought-after collectors items.

This 'Third State' copy has been very carefully peeled to reveal the original artwork beneath, leaving almost no trace of the pasted cover.

The sleeve contains the original vinyl album, with matching numbers from the Scranton pressing plant.

Both the sleeve and the record itself are in very good condition.

Also included is a copy of the original Capitol Records recall letter, dated June 16, 1966, asking for the record to be returned to the distributor.

A truly exceptional display piece, and one of the most iconic - and notorious - Beatles items a collector can own.
