St Lucia 1864-76 (1s) pale orange, watermark CC, perforation 12½, SG14c.
A brilliant mint block of 4 with large part original gum. A rare and beautiful block of this colour variety and wonderfully fresh.
St Lucia followed a practice adopted by some British colonies in their initial stamp issues with no denominations being printed. Instead, the value of stamp issues was designated by their colour alone.
This practice enabled one undenominated design to be used for printing efficiency. Also, the absence of a denomination on stamps printed gave postal authorities more flexibility to change postal rates.
