Great Britain 1840 1d black Plate 7 cover, SG2.
A very fine used four margin example lettered 'KK' neatly tied to a clean fresh entire envelope by a red Maltese Cross and clearly showing evidence of re-entry at base and top right.
It was sent locally within Cambridge and backstamped for 'NO.30.1840'.
A most attractive penny black cover.
The re-entry is the result of wearing and damage to the printing plate resulting in a need to strengthen the worn or damaged images on the printing plate. This was achieved by realigning the transfer roll with each worn position and re-entering the design by rocking the transfer roll back and forth over the earlier image.
