China 1949 South West China People's Republic China general issues, Yunnan Province set of 4 'unit' stamps of Nationalist China to (-) rose-red, overprinted at Kunming, SGSW56/59.
Superb set of four unused as issued.
A very scarce set of these 'unit' stamps with most attractive designs including steam locomotive, Douglas DC-4, postman on motorcycle and mountains.
In March and April 1949 inflation of the Gold Yuan currency became so rapid that it was no longer possible to print stamps to keep pace with it. Stamps were therefore produced to be sold at the rate of the day for the service indicated. These were referred to as 'unit' stamps.
Due to the collapse of the central administration in face of the advance of the Communist armies, stamps were overprinted by the local administrations. Temporary labels were also used.
