Cook Islands 1902 (2d) deep brown, perforations 11, ERROR NO FIGURES OF VALUE, SG31a.
A fine used example cancelled with part Rarotonga circular date stamp.
A major Pacific Islands rarity. One sheet of 60 was discovered in 1917, of which just 17 examples were used.
This represents the only error of missing value from this period. The stamps were printed from a master plate with the value being added by a series of separate duty plates. One sheet of the 2d missed the second pass through the press and was issued without value.
The stamp issue features the White Tern, which is a small seabird native to tropical oceans in of the world, sometimes known as the fairy tern.
The Cook Islands comprise 15 small islands spread out in the south Pacific Ocean. They became a British Protectorate in 1888 and a Dependency of New Zealand in 1901. Before the introduction of the Cook Islands Post Office, mail was forwarded via Auckland, New Zealand.
