Great Britain 1967 3d Christmas Paintings "The Adoration of the Shepherds (School of Seville)" error, SG756ac.
A superb unmounted mint, with full original gum, example with gold (face value) omitted only.
Offered with and example of the normal stamp for comparison and presentation purposes.
The error occurred due to the gold colour being partially missing. The more common error is where the gold is entirely missing resulting in the loss of the Queen' head and face value, where there are 200 mint examples in existence.
This error with the partial gold colour omission is exceptionally rare. It was first included in the Stanley Gibbons catalogue in 2004. The printing variety remained as a curiosity in a collection for over 35 years until it was sold to a dealer, who identified the error.
It was first thought that the error occurred in a similar way to that on the 4d value, but another example turned up at auction in November 2005 in a pair with a stamp missing entire gold colour. Given this second discovery, the error most likely occurred due to the gold ink running out half way through a column of stamps.
This is the finest of the two known examples.
This example was previously sold by Stanley Gibbons in 2015 for £3,000. The current catalogue value of £1,100 in respect of such a major and peculiar stamp error, where there are only two known examples is, in our opinion, ridiculous.
