Papua New Guinea 1960 3d on ½d emerald "Matschie's Tree Kangaroo" Postage Due error with SURCHARGE DOUBLE, SGD3a.
A very fine unmounted mint example with full original gum.
A rare surcharge error as only one sheet originally existed.
These Postage Due stamps were surcharged by the Government Printer at Port Moresby.
Accompanied with a British Philatelic Association (BPA) certificate of authenticity (2006).
The stamp depicts the words "PAPUA AND NEW GUINEA". Following the defeat of the Japanese in 1945, stamps of Australia were used in the combined territory. These remained valid for postal purposes from Papua and New Guinea until 1 March 1953. The name of the combined territory was not changed from "Papua and New Guinea" to "Papua New Guinea" until the beginning of 1972.
