A superb Queen Victoria signed Royal document with an interesting military history.
A partially printed Royal military appointment signed by Queen Victoria.
Dated 20 September 1895, and signed at “Our Court at St James's”.
Queen Victoria has signed "Victoria R.I." in the upper left corner, above the blue papered seal which remains intact.
The single page document is backed on linen, and measures 32 x 42cm when open. In good condition, with folding marks with occasional splitting.
The document is a military appointment, promoting James Knowles to the position of 2nd Lieutenant in the Land Forces, 15th (The King's) Hussars.
Records show Knowles later rose to the rank of Brigade Major; served as an aide-de-camp to Earl Roberts, Commander-in-Chief of the Forces during the Second Boer War; and was awarded the O.B.E for his military career in 1920.
A very good example of Queen Victoria's signature, presented on a characterful document with a known history. A wonderful collector's piece.
