Back in the 90s, I used to dread the question. It would inevitably happen at parties. At the pub. On dates…
‘What do you do for work?’ My reply: ‘I’m a chartered accountant.’ I’d be met with a mix of disappointment and disinterest. Let me tell you, those four little words are a real conversation-stopper.
Fast forward 30 years, and as CEO of Paul Fraser Collectibles I now love telling people about what I do for a living. Far from being a conversation stopper, it’s a conversation starter.
‘I’m selling a document signed by Henry the VIII at the moment.’
‘An Apollo 11 spacesuit arrived in the office last week.’
‘Do you want to see Napoleon’s hair?’
It was in 1999 that I saw the light when my innate love of collecting drew me to stamp specialist Stanley Gibbons as finance director. I was appointed CEO of Stanley Gibbons in 2003 and led the business from a market capitalisation of $5 million to a peak of $200
million. Today I can use that experience of the collecting sector to help you protect and grow your capital.
During my time at Stanley Gibbons, I managed the purchase and sale of some of the world's largest and most renowned collections. These included the most celebrated British stamp collection ever assembled (worth in excess of $10m). So when you invest with Paul Fraser Collectibles, you can do so with complete confidence.
I joined Paul Fraser Collectibles in 2016. Today, I continue to specialise in advising high-net-worth clients on building their investment portfolios.
My primary collection at home is rare postage stamps. They are genuine miniature works of art. I love how they are artefacts of modern history. And the fact my collection has grown in value by around 11% per annum over the past 20 years helps me love stamps even more.
After stamps, it’s historical documents and rare signatures. One of my favourites is a sea shanty written by Lord Nelson’s crew in 1797, honouring their beloved Admiral. With it is a handwritten letter signed by Nelson shortly before he lost his right arm in battle. It amazes me you can own such personal pieces from legendary historical figures.
At Paul Fraser Collectibles, our business success is through buying only rare authentic collectibles of the finest quality with a long-term historic record of rising in value. First and foremost, we consider ourselves an investment company benefiting from the fact the assets we acquire rise in value year on year. We release some of these assets to collectors and investors to generate an income. This business model ensures that we profit together with our clients.
