The Lions’ presence in South Africa was controversial as it ignored the British government’s stipulation to avoid sporting events against the South African apartheid regime. 

On the pitch, the Lions lost three of their four tests against the Springboks, although won all 14 non-international matches.

Presented to British Lions lock Allan Martin on the tour, which took place between May and July 1980. 

Signed superbly on the reverse of the hide in black marker pen by  22 of the squad and management:
