Bermuda 1865-1903 1s green, watermark CC, perforations 14x12½, block of 12 (6x12) from upper right pane (rows 7 & 8) with interpane margin at left and full sheet margin at right, showing VARIETY IMPERFORATE BETWEEN STAMPS AND RIGHT MARGIN, SG11var.
A fine mint positional block with original gum and with fresh colour. Typical slight toning, and upper variety with minor thin spots in margin, but a spectacular and very rare multiple.
Only 20 examples of the printing variety are possible (from one sheet), with the majority no longer surviving in this format.
Provenance: Ex Claude W. H. Ludington (Spink 6/99, lot 323, realised £4,600) and Sir Henry Tucker.
Ludington was a highly respected philatelist, particularly known for his expertise in British colonial stamps, including those from Bermuda. His collection of Bermuda stamps was considered one of the most comprehensive and meticulously curated in the world.
