- Bobby Charlton's personally-owned childhood Bible
- Inscribed by Charlton, and featuring some of his earliest-known signatures
Bobby Charlton (1937 - 2023) was an English footballer, regarded as one of the greatest players in history. His career saw him win the World Cup, the European Cup, the English league title, the F.A Cup and the Ballon d'Or award.
Charlton was one of the survivors of the 1958 Munich Air disaster, in which 23 people - including 8 of his young Manchester Utd team mates - were tragically killed.
Charlton held the goalscoring record for both England and Manchester United for over 40 years, and was one of the sports most beloved and respected ambassadors.
A Bible owned by Bobby Charlton as a schoolboy, circa 1950 - 1953, as he attended Bedlington Grammar School.
Charlton was spotted playing for his local school team by Manchester United scout Joe Armstrong in February 1953, and signed his first contract with the club in 1954.
Signed multiple times by Charlton in both ink and pencil. These autographs are believed to be the earliest-known examples of his signature.
Bearing the address of his childhood home, 114 Beatrice Street, Ashington in Northumberland, where his family lived for many years.
Inscribed inside the front and back covers, and featuring Charlton's childhood nickname "Chuck".
The 240-page leather-bound Bible measures approximately 9cm by 14cm, and is in well-worn condition.
It was originally bought at a Manchester jumble sale in the 1980s without any knowledge that it had once belonged to Charlton.
When his name was later discovered inside, the owner sent an inquiry to Charlton via his company Halba Travel Ltd. She received a note in reply confirming its authenticity, which is included with the Bible.
A truly unique piece of English football history.
