- A rare handwritten and signed note by Charles III.
- Dated June 1978 and unusually signed twice, in 1978 and 1984.
A King Charles III handwritten and signed note, in good condition.
The note is written on a 'memorandum' card from Charles' personal stationery, with the heading “From H.R.H The Prince of Wales”.
It's dated 9th June 1978, and addessed to Lady Hawkins.
The note relates to Major Sir Michael Hawkins (1914 - 1977), who served as private secretary to the Duke of Gloucester.
It was sent to his wife Virginia, Lady Hawkins, in recognition for their years of hard work and loyal service, following his passing in 1977.
It reads in full:
"At a recent meeting of the Joint Jubilee Trusts the whole council was unanimous in wishing me to send you the jubilee shield in recognition of all Michael's hard work and of your support for him at a time when you cannot have seen very much of him. It comes with our very best wishes, our gratitude and our sympathy."
The original faded text of the note, including his signature, has been overwritten in bold ink by Charles himself.
The note is accompanied by an official letter from Buckingham Palace, dated January 18, 1984, and signed by the Hon. Edward Adeane who served as Private Secretary to the Prince of Wales from 1979 to 1985.
It reads: "I have the greatest pleasure in enclosing the original note from the Prince of Wales which His Royal Highness has now inked in."
The fact that Charles took the time to personally 'restore' his original note six years later shows how highly Major Hawkins and Lady Hawkins were regarded by the Royal family.
A highly unusual Royal autograph, signed twice by the future King of England.
