Gibraltar 1884 (16 JU) registered cover to Trieste, correctly franked at 4½d rate (2d registration + 2½d postage) by Great Britain 1884 2d and 2½d lilac. Cancelled by individual blurred strikes of "A26" numeral, with sender's green boxed date stamp at lower left overstamped by "REGISTERED/GIBRALTAR" oval date stamp, SGZ79/80.
Fine to very fine backstamps of San Fernando (18 JUN), Madrid (19 JUN) and Trieste (24 June). A couple of minor envelope faults, still an exceptional franking, the 2d very rare on cover.
Stamps of Great Britain were issued for use in Gibraltar from 3 September 1857 to the end of 1885.
Provenance: Ex Clough (Harmers 14 May 1997, lot 524) and illustrated in "Posted in Gibraltar" by William Hine-Haycock (p.33).
An interesting and extremely rare piece of Postal History with exceptional provenance.
