At the time of the 1922 creation of the Irish Republic, the Postmaster General of the Irish Free State invited firms in London and Dublin to compete in a stamp design competition. Dollard Printing House Limited, Hely Limited, Perkins Bacon & Co., O'Loughlin, Murphy & Boland and the Pictorial Printing Machine Company each produced essays for consideration, as did some other unrecorded organisations
