A portable Smith-Corona Electra 120 model electric typewriter in its original case, manufactured circa late 1960s / early 1970s.

This portable typewriter was personally owned and used by Beatle John Lennon during his travels in the 1970s.

In good condition.

Provenance.

The typewriter originates from the memorabilia collection of Irwin and Clarine Pate.

Irwin Pate worked as soul legend James Brown’s booking and promotions manager for 14 years, and promoted concerts in New York for six decades.

Through his contacts Pate built an impressive collection, including personal items from the likes of Brown, Lennon, Elvis Presley, Jim Morrison, and George Harrison.

Pate met Lennon in the early 1970s, after he moved to Greenwich Village with Yoko Ono, and acquired his typewriter through a mutual friend.

It is accompanied by a full letter of provenance from Clarine Pate, stating its history and their ownership, which reads in part:

“During his career Irwin and I obtained a large collection of personal clothing and articles belonging to numerous entertainers. When travelling on concert tours Irwin would obtain many of these articles from both tour crew members and venue staff.

“This Smith-Corona typewriter was owned and used by John Lennon in the 1970s. He would use it when travelling. Eventually Lennon gave it to a close friend of his in the music industry when he no longer needed it.

“Irwin knew and worked with this gentleman that John Lennon had gifted it to. Irwin was able to obtain this typewriter from this mutual friend, and it has been in our collection ever since.”

A truly superb piece of John Lennon memorabilia with a direct connection to his creative spark as a writer.
