History of the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona
Originally launched in 1963 as the Cosmograph, a manual-wind chronograph for race car drivers, the Cosmograph Daytona obtained its name two years later in 1965 when Rolex became the official timekeeper for the famed Daytona NASCAR race.
This remained a fairly low-production and unpopular model until the first automatic Daytona launched in 1988, after which sales began to soar and it became cemented as the coveted series that it is today.
It was further propelled into the watch hall of fame in 2017 when a vintage model reference 6239 owned by actor Paul Newman sold for $17.8m, making it the most valuable wristwatch ever sold.
Daytonas are known for being unobtainable through Rolex authorised dealers the world over.
