Clars continues its 2010 success into the New Year, led by fine Chinese art

Clars' auction house last year had the most successful of their history, with sales totalling more than $10m.

Redge Martin, president of Clars, predicted that, based on sales currently being planned, 2011 could be even better, and based on the results of their January 2011 sale, his predictions are on track. The two-day sale earned over $800,000, the largest January sale in the company's history.

Asian collectibles topped the lots at this two-day event. A Chinese painting album, after Zhang Daqian (1899-1983), achieved $59,250; followed by a Chinese carved coral figurine featuring a celestial beauty, which sold for $13,035.

A framed Chinese monochrome drawing titled Xianggang Bifengtang (Seaport of Hong Kong), after Wu Guanzhong (1919-2010) achieved $9,480. These are all good investments given the strong market for Chinese collectibles.

Among the important antique furnishings that were offered was a circa-1900 Regina Corona model 35 floor standing music player. Selling solidly within estimate, this lot earned $11,850.

A pair of Meret Oppenheim (1913-1985) Traccia tables from the Ultramobile collection surpassed estimate, selling for $5,000 each, as did a Steinway and Company New York, Style D circa-1872 concert grand piano, which went for $11,850.

A French Provincial marriage armoire, circa 1860, sold nicely at $4,740; and a Roger Springer for Dunbar credenza model No. 7111 went for $6,500.

The jewellery category glittered at this sale. A wonderful 14K yellow gold charm bracelet with 12 charms, commemorative coins and medallions, sold just shy of $9,500. A highly desirable gentleman's Patek Philippe Moonphase Power Reserve 18K white gold wristwatch achieved $22,515; and a diamond ring set in platinum with one 2.75 carat brilliant-cut diamond sold for $13,035.

There were strong sterling offerings, the highlight of which was a Buccellati sterling silver flatware service for twelve in the Milano pattern. This exceptional set went for $8,295.

Clars' February 5-6 Fine Estates Auction will feature: important historical documents, exceptional fine art and antique furnishings and, as always, very strong selections of Asian collectibles and jewellery. Internet live bidding will be available.
