Francois-Xavier Lalanne's Singe Avise (Grand), a patinated bronze ape, has top-performed at a major design auction in New York.

Numbered seven from an edition of eight such pieces, the circa 2005 work sold for $413,000 at Phillips on June 11, comfortably within estimate.

Lalanne's work is no stranger to the upper echelons of auctions. Three of his sheep-based works auctioned for a combined £1.6m ($2.5m) last year.

Yesterday's sale also featured Cake, a circa 2008 stool fashioned by Brazilian brothers Fernando and Humberto Campana.

Comprising a menagerie of stuffed animals, the work sold for $31,250, just above its $30,000 high estimate.
