A 17th century portolan (navigational) chart showing the islands and coastline of the Mediterranean is expected to sell for around £40,000-60,000 ($51,773-77,660).
The map shows a number of routes around the Mediterranean
The chart was drawn up by Placidus Caloiro et Oliva, a well-known Sicilian mapmaker, circa 1637.
Matthew Haley, Bonhams’ head of fine books and manuscripts, said: “Not only is this Portolan chart a beautiful object, but the European and Ottoman Empire flags scattered across it also provide a wonderfully visual impression of the spread and complexity of international rivalry in the region in early to mid -17th century.”
It will be offered as part of the Fine Books, Atlases, Manuscripts and Photographs sale in London on June 14.
