12th 2006 Ford GT headlines at Mecum Auctions with $335,000 bid

A 2006 Ford GT headlined Mecum Auctions' Chicago sale on October 9-11, realising $335,000.

The design is based on the classic GT40 of the 1960s, although a 5.4 litre modular supercharged V8 provides significantly beefed-up 550 brake horsepower.

The present lot is numbered 12 of 2,011 and was sold in mint condition with only 300 miles on the clock.

The Ford GT is the only US car built in recent years to have advanced in value rather than fallen.

Originally retailing for around $150,000, its value has more than doubled in the eight years since it was introduced.

The sale predominantly focused on classic American muscle cars, with a 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 Fastback providing another highlight.

In order to get a Hemi engine into Nascar to compete with Chrysler, Ford had to produce a minimum of 500 production models which would be offered to the public.

The result was the Boss 429 - a supremely powerful, heavily modified Mustang.

The model is hugely popular among collectors, with one unrestored example making $417,000 at Mecum in Florida last year.

A sale at RM Auctions on October 9-10 included a rare 1930 Cadillac V-16 Roadster by Fleetwood, which sold for $1.1m.
