A 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider is the headline lot of Sotheby's Villa Erba sale in Italy on May 23.
The lot is one of only 56 SWB California Spiders ever produced. While the model was built primarily for the American market the present lot is one of the few examples to have stayed in Europe.

While there is no estimate available, the current record for a 250 Spider (in original condition) stands at $28.5m.
Peter Wallman, a spokesman for RM Sotheby's, comments: "The words 'California Spider' are synonymous with 'La Dolce Vita' and the finest motoring experience that can be imagined.
"Perhaps the most beautiful convertible car ever made, and featuring the powerful Colombo designed 3.0-litre V-12 engine, this spacious and versatile two-seat sports car with race car performance is the ultimate road going Ferrari of all time."
Other lots in the sale include a 1950 Ferrari 195 Inter Berlinetta, which carries an estimate of $1.1m-1.7m.
It's described by the auction house as "one of the most important remaining examples of an early coachbuilt road-going Ferrari in existence."
