Scottsdale, Arizona once again played host to some of the world's finest classic motor cars over the weekend, posting total sales of $39.8m.
Among the sale's many highlights was a 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider. It alone brought $3,905,000.
The rare vintage Ferrari is number 36 of just 50 ever built. It boasts coachwork by Scaglietti and a sophisticated chassis and engine.
The chassis, in particular, is an improved 508 d modification. This was a more developed version of the original 250 GT chassis first introduced in 1954.
Under the car's bonnet is a 128 D unit engine. It features include revised cylinder heads with new valves and later intake manifolds, twin rear-mounted distributors, stronger connecting rods and a new crankshaft. In other words, vintage engineering at its finest.

In the end, the California Spider's final sale value comfortably exceeded the high bracket of its $3,400,000-3,800,000 presale estimate.
This 1959 Ferrari 250 GT was just beaten by a 1955 Mercedes Gullwing. The Gullwing remains perennially popular among collectors, and the Scottsdale example sold for $4,620,000.
