A rare number plate ("AG 1") has sold for £200,000 ($304,467) at Thomas R Callan in Ayr, Scotland.

The lot, which included a 1999 Fiat Seicento, was the first plate issued in the town and dates to 1924.
Auction house head Michael Callan described the atmosphere in the room to the Daily Record: "When the hammer went down at £200,000 there was an enormous cheer.
"It was a phenomenal price and the number plate is our highest selling item ever…
"The bidding started at £60,000 and with a sea of hands the bidding reached more than £100,000 in only a minute."
Fortunately the sale didn't end in a brawl like the Chinese number plate sale last week.
The record for a British number plate is £518,000 ($788,484), set for "25 O" in a DVLA auction in 2014.
