The coin was issued in a run of 25 and displays a George and the Dragon design by Italian engraver Benerdetto Pistrucci. It was the first £5 coin ever produced.
The value never become standardised but is still issued as a commemorative piece.
A 1644 Charles I Oxford £1 made £120,000 ($188,911).
It was minted during the English civil war, following the uprooting of the royal court from London to Oxford. It was here that he commanded his armies until his defeat in 1646.
The lot depicts the king mounted on a horse, holding his sword aloft, and displays exceptional toning. Spink described it in the run-up to the sale as "an extremely rare and a beautiful example of this famous and important coin."
