Following on from their recent grand sales of US and World coins in Boston, Heritage, who rarely rest for long, are planning another major US coin auction in just a few weeks' time.
Some of the details are still coming through, but here's a quick look ahead.
The current expected leader in the September auction - though as yet not carrying an estimate - is a high grade 1927-S Saint Gaudens $20 Liberty Eagle.
Previously this rare specimen has brought values in the region of $40,000-50,000 at auction.
At one time, in the 1950s, this would have been likely to have caused even more excitement than now as, despite its recorded mintage of 3.1 million, until the late 1940s-early 1950s, the 1927-S was considered the rarest of the entire series.

The early collector Dr. Charles Green demonstrated that, despite the high mintage figure, only just over 3,000 specimens had been released before the Gold Recall of 1933.
Whilst a few examples have been discovered here and there which have edged the 1927-S down the listings, it is still exceptionally rare, especially in high grade. The example on offer at Heritage has the bright yellow-gold mint lustre which the 1927-S often exhibits.
The strike is good and solid for the date, and the abrasions mostly very minor, and it is likely to make a strong investment and is graded MS-63. The Long Beach, California auction takes place from September 22-26, whilst online bidding begins from September 3.
