An early 19th century vinaigrette (scent box) carried in both a diving bell and a balloon will star at Heritage Auctions.
James Sadler was a pioneering English balloonist
The piece is part of a collection of pieces in the June 10-11 Fine and Decorative Arts Auction that celebrate the early years of the hot air balloon.
An engraving of a balloon is inscribed: “This Box Ascended with Mr. Jno Sadler on the Jubilee Aug. 1 1814.”
The interior displays a diving bell, with the words: “This Box descended in a Diving Bell at Devonport Sepr 1821”.
It’s valued at $1,000-1,500.
