On October 21, Heritage Auctions will offer lots from David and Janice Frent’s celebrated political Americana collection.

The sale is the first in a series of auctions that will liquidate the couple’s enormous archive.

Ulysses S Grant and Schulyer Colfax successfully campaigned for the presidency in 1868

The lead lot will be a Grant & Colfax jugate campaign flag from 1868 presidential campaign.

It’s the largest known flag of its type and is believed to be unique. Bidding will start at $25,000.

The rest of the items in the sale are of equally high quality.

Tom Slater, director of Americana Auctions, said: "Over the years, prices of rare political items have risen to the point where many purchases amount to investment decisions.   

“When that occurs in a collecting field, condition becomes more and more important.

"But clearly this was a priority from day one for the Frents.

“That practice should pay real dividends for the sellers as we auction the collection. Many of the pieces are the finest we have ever seen, and that will not go unnoticed by bidders."

The auction is the first in a series of sales of the Frent collection.

"It’s hard to imagine living without the collection”, said consigner Janice Frent, “but over time the burden of being its custodians has grown harder to bear; it’s a great responsibility.

"Now we find ourselves looking forward to sharing these much-loved treasures with a new generation of collectors."
