A leather bound address book containing the contact details of several high-ranking Nazis is for sale at Henry Aldridge Auctioneers.
Among the names featured are Reinhard Heydrich, Hermann Goering and Heinrich Himmler.
Captain John Hodges found the book soon after the war ended
In fact, the only name that doesn’t appear is Adolf Hitler – suggesting this may be his personal address book. However, this cannot be conclusively proved.
The book was found by British officer Captain John Hodge in the ruins of the Reich Chancellery in Berlin in 1945.
Auction house owner Andrew Aldridge told Fox News: “This is a unique piece of history that offers both historians and collectors access to a previously unseen amount of information relating to the highest echelons of one of the most evil regimes in modern history.”
The piece is valued at £15,000-20,000 ($20,242-26,990) ahead of the September 23 auction.
There’s also a painting of the Konigssee, a lake near Hitler’s mountain retreat, painted by a German veteran of the first world war and gifted to Hitler in 1936.
It's valued at up to £10,000 ($13,499).
This piece is also from the collection of Captain Hodge. The paint has been severely fire damaged.
The back is inscribed (in translation): “My war comrade and Reich Kanzler for you as Reich Kanzler as the fourth present given in loyalty from Hermann Schuppe”.
Hitler was a WW1 veteran too. Like many Germans, he felt betrayed by the surrender in 1918. His meteoric rise was driven by this collective anger, as he was one of few people giving voice to it.
