A photograph of James Dean at a racetrack was the headline lot of a March 22 sale at Premiere Props.
It achieved $25,000 in the California auction, an increase of 733% on a $3,000 estimate.
The image shows Dean standing next to a Porsche Speedster and was taken just before the actor and car enthusiast's first official race in Palm Springs in 1955.

A few months later, on September 30, 1955, he was killed in a car accident.
It was taken by Gus Vignolle, a journalist and photographer for MotoRacing magazine, and appeared in the January 13, 1956 issue.
Another image of Dean from the same archive achieved $20,500. Both images were sold with full copyright and the relevant copy of MotoRacing.
