Elvis and Priscilla Presley’s divorce papers sold for £20,000 ($26,132) at Henry Aldridge Auctioneers over the weekend.
The papers (signed by both parties) are dated August 15, 1972, several months after the couple split, and show the details of the settlement.
Elvis and Priscilla divorced in 1972
Priscilla receives funds from the sale of the couple’s houses, as well as several cars.
The document reads: "Unfortunate circumstances and unhappy differences have arisen between the parties by reason of which they have lived separate and apart since February 23, 1972, and by reason of which they intend to dissolve their marriage.
“By this property settlement the parties wish to avoid unnecessary litigation and the emotional stress and expense which would accompany."
Elvis and Priscilla met at a gathering in Germany, where Elvis carried out his military service, in September 1959 - when she was just 14. Priscilla’s stepfather was in the Air Force and received an invitation to the party.
Two years later they began seeing one another. They married five years later, in 1967.
The marriage was not a happy one and soon the couple found themselves living largely separate lives. Despite this, Elvis took the divorce badly. He sank into a deep depression and ramped up his already dangerous level of drug abuse.
We have this strand of hair for sale, taken during Elvis’ military haircut in March 1958 (just over a year before he met Priscilla).
