A rug from a US sheriff's office mistakenly emblazoned with the words "In Dog We Trust" has sold for $9,500 in a sale at onlineauction.com that closed on January 21.

It was discovered on January 14, having sat in the office in Pinellas County, Florida for several months, and immediately went viral after a photograph was uploaded to the internet.
The agency wrote in the description on the auction site: "The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office will not 'sweep anything under the rug.'
"Due to extensive interest regarding our plans for the 'doggone' rug, you can bid on it here, and we will donate 100% of your bid to Canine Estates Inc., a local animal rescue."
