Antiquorum's March 17 auction in Geneva has seen a new auction record set for an A Lange Tourbillon "Pour le Merite".

There were just 150 examples of the watch ever produced, and just 15 in white gold - this is the first to appear at auction

The 1996 white gold wristwatch sold for an impressive $358,387, making a 19.4% increase on the $300,000 high estimate. It is now the most valuable A Lange & Sohne wristwatch ever sold at auction.

The German company produced just 150 examples of its Tourbillon "Pour le Merite" in 18 karat gold, with a further 50 in platinum and just one in stainless steel. Of the 150 in 18 karat gold, this example is one of the 15 made in white gold, while another 15 were produced in pink gold.

This was the first example in white gold ever seen at auction. An impressively technical watch, it also boasts brilliant aesthetic appeal combined with superb craftsmanship.

Also appearing in the auction was a Henry Capt repeating musical watch, which conceals an erotic automaton scene. Made circa 1810, the pocket watch is a brilliant example of the legendary Swiss watchmaker's work, produced in 18k gold and painted enamel.

While the pocket watch is easily compared to many of Capt's finest works, it is one of the very few known examples to feature two automaton scenes - making it extremely appealing for collectors. It is also of a higher specification than most, with three animations on the dial instead of two, commanding a final sale price of $155,107.
