Drawn in pencil and ink by Shepard on a piece of thick artist's board measuring 10.5" by 15".
The illustration itself measures 6" by 8.5".
Dated circa 1935, and signed by Shepard "EHS" in the lower left corner of the illustration.
Also featuring the title "À la mode provençale" and the caption "Shopping in Provence" written in his hand.
In good condition, with some foxing to the board affecting the upper-right corner.
Perfume from Provence is the charming real-life story of Lady Winifred Fortescue and Sir John Fortescue, who left England in the 1930s to build a new life in the rural South of France.
Shepard spent 10 days with the Fortescues and produce approx. 30 original drawings for the book.
This drawing, which depicts the general store in the heart of the village, can be found on page 90.
Published in 1935, the book was an instant best-seller - in part due to Shepard's illustrations - and remains a classic to this day.
