Bahamas 1963 8d sepia 'Freedom from Hunger' error name and value omitted, SG223a.
A very fine unmounted mint, with full original gum, lower right corner horizontal pair with '1A (1A)' plate numbers confirming the error. Small wrinkle on right stamp mentioned for accuracy.
Accompanied with a matching positional block of 4 of the normal stamp for comparison and presentation purposes.
Unique positional multiple of this remarkable error, involving a monocolour stamp printed from two cylinders (one of which was omitted).
Only 36 examples are known to exist, and many have now been hinged, or suffered from climatic toning.
The printing error affected a single sheet, which was purchased in Nassau and used for postage by the Royal Palm and Cottages Hotel at Coral Sands.
24 of the stamps had been used when the error was spotted by a staff member.
The remaining block of 36, consisting the bottom six rows, was later acquired by Stanley Gibbons and exhibited at Stampex in London in March 1964.
‘B & K' handstamp on reverse margin, by Bridger & Kay, dealers since 1897 in British Commonwealth stamps and postal history, providing independent proof of authenticity.
